Young Authors Camps

Picture
The Southern Maine Writing Project’s Young Authors Camps provide young writers the opportunity to develop their skills by writing under the guidance of highly skilled teachers in a fun, relaxed environment.

Campers will:
  • Freely explore different genres of writing that may include biography, poetry, fiction, and non-fiction.
  • Develop their writing with the help of experienced classroom teachers, Telling Room Writers, and Southern Maine Writing Project teacher consultants.
  • Celebrate their work and share their creative pieces in a relaxed non-competitive summer atmosphere with peers and mentors.
  • Publish a high-quality piece of writing.

...parents love us!

“My daughter absolutely LOVED this camp!”

“I found the camp well organized.  My daughter had nothing but good to say.  She really liked the walks, the writing topics and other campers.  My only complaint is that it wasn’t longer.  Thanks for such a great experience.”

“My daughter enjoyed each and every day.  She was always anxious to share her adventures.  The week helped her to develop new confidence and make new acquaintances.  Everything worked...thank you all so much.”

“My daughter LOVED her week here and is already excited for next year!”

“I have been delighted with the energy of the camp experience!  Our daughter had fun, expanded her capacity to add detail/descriptions to her writing, and strengthened her sense of herself as a writer.”

Camp Locations

The Portland Young Authors Camps are presented by the Southern Maine Writing Project in conjunction with The Telling Room: Greater Portland’s Community Writing Center.  The Young Authors’ Camp enhances and extends the work done in classrooms so students may continue to live a writer’s life and share their voices with our interconnected world.

The Telling Room is a nonprofit writing program in Portland, Maine, dedicated to young writers and storytellers between the ages of 8 and 18. Our goal is simple: To meet each student’s passion for writing with enthusiasm, to provide role models for those looking to further their writing, and to privilege the act of storytelling as a vital means of expression and community building.

The Brick Store Museum in Kennebunk offers a beautiful location to walk, write, and explore the history of this community.  Thanks to the Brick Store Museum for housing us two years in a row.

Our locations expand as camps are asked for and as teachers are available to run them.  All other locations that are not mention are equally are appreciated!
